42 women graduate from parenting program at Delta Correctional Facility

A group of 42 women at Delta Correctional Facility recently graduated from a parenting program designed to help them build stronger relationships with their children while serving their sentences. The program, known as Hannah's Gift and Parenting, takes its name from the biblical story of Hannah and her son Samuel, found in 1 Samuel chapters 1 through 3. That story focuses on patience, faith, and the deep bond between a mother and her child, which serves as the foundation for the curriculum.

The course goes beyond basic parenting tips. It covers communication skills, emotional regulation, and ways to maintain meaningful contact with kids from a distance. Participants learn how to handle difficult conversations, rebuild trust, and plan for a more stable home life after release. For many of the women, this is the first time they have had structured guidance on how to be present for their children, even when they are not physically together.

Officials at the facility say the program has shown real results. Graduates report feeling more confident in their roles as mothers and more hopeful about their futures. The ceremony included certificates, personal reflections, and a few tears. Staff members noted that the women have formed a support network that will continue after the class ends, which is often the hardest part of any prison program.

The next session is already being planned, and organizers hope to expand the number of participants. For now, the 42 graduates are returning to their units with new skills and a renewed sense of purpose. Their children, many of whom are being cared for by relatives or foster families, may not have been in the room, but they were the reason the work mattered.
