New York City Council member Zohran Mamdani hosted his first Parents' Night Out event last Friday, and by all accounts, it was a hit. The gathering, held at a community center in Astoria, Queens, drew dozens of local families who came for an evening of food, music, and childcare. The idea was simple: give parents a few hours off while their kids are looked after by volunteers, all at no cost.

Mamdani, who represents parts of Queens and is known for his work on housing and tenant rights, said the event came out of conversations with neighbors who told him they rarely get a break. "Parenting is relentless," he said in a short speech to the crowd. "If we can build a little community support, that goes a long way."

The night featured a DJ, a face-painting table, and a corner with board games for older kids. Volunteers from local mutual aid groups helped watch the children, while parents were free to sit, chat, and eat dinner without interruption. Several attendees said they hoped it would become a regular thing.

Mamdani confirmed that he is already planning a second event for next month, with a larger space and more volunteers. For many first-time attendees, the evening was a reminder that small, practical gestures can make a big difference in daily life.
