Matthew McConaughey has figured out a way to get his teenage kids to open up without them feeling like they are being grilled. During a recent stop on The Drew Barrymore Show, the actor shared the specific approach he uses at home to encourage deeper conversations with his three children.

The key, he explained, is asking a question that shifts the focus away from a direct interrogation. Instead of asking how their day went or what they did, McConaughey frames it in a way that invites reflection without pressure. He said he will ask his kids something like, "What was the best part of your day, and what was the hardest part?" But the trick is in the delivery. He makes sure they know he is not looking for a specific answer and that he is not going to judge whatever they say.

The Oscar winner, who shares sons Levi and Livingston and daughter Vida with his wife Camila Alves, said the goal is to create a safe space. He wants his kids to feel comfortable sharing both the highs and the lows, knowing that he will listen without immediately offering advice or criticism. He noted that teens often shut down when they sense a lecture coming, so he keeps his reactions neutral and lets them lead the conversation.

McConaughey also admitted that it does not always work perfectly, and sometimes the kids just want to be left alone. But he finds that when he stays patient and keeps the door open, they eventually come around. The simple act of asking about the hardest part of the day, he says, lets them know that he is there for the messy stuff too, not just the wins.
