Matthew McConaughey's mom, 94, shares her old-school parenting tip

Kay McConaughey, the 94-year-old mother of Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey, is sharing the old-school approach she used to raise her three sons. In a recent interview, she credited a straightforward, no-nonsense philosophy for shaping them into responsible adults.

"They turned out to be great men, because the values I gave them they put to use when they left," Kay said. Her method centered on teaching independence early. She explained that she never coddled her boys or solved their problems for them. Instead, she made sure they understood the consequences of their actions from a young age.

One of her key rules was simple: if her sons wanted something, they had to work for it. She did not hand out allowances for nothing. Chores were mandatory, and respect for others was non-negotiable. Kay emphasized that being a parent meant being a guide, not a friend. She believed that letting children face small failures at home prepared them for bigger challenges later in life.

Her advice for modern parents is to stop overprotecting their kids. "You have to let them fall," she said. "You can pick them up, but you cannot carry them forever." Kay noted that her sons, including Matthew and his brothers Pat and Michael, learned to stand on their own two feet because she refused to do everything for them.

Despite her firm rules, Kay said she always made sure her children knew they were loved. The combination of high expectations and unconditional support, she believes, is what built their character. Now in her 90s, she watches her sons with pride, confident that the old-school values she instilled are still guiding them every day.
