A new study from Penn State researchers suggests that strict, controlling parenting during the toddler years could interfere with how children learn to regulate stress as they grow into preschoolers. The research tracked young children over time, measuring their cortisol levels-a key stress hormone-in response to everyday challenges.
The findings indicate that toddlers whose parents used harsh or rigid disciplinary tactics showed unusual patterns of cortisol activity by the time they reached preschool age. Instead of a healthy rise and fall of the hormone in response to stressful situations, these children often displayed a blunted or flattened stress response. This pattern has been linked in other studies to emotional and behavioral problems later in life.
As children move from toddlerhood into the preschool years, they naturally start to become more independent from their parents. But the study suggests that when parents rely heavily on strict control-such as frequent scolding, physical punishment, or inflexible rules-it may actually hinder the development of a child's own coping mechanisms. The researchers emphasize that while setting boundaries is important, an overly rigid approach might teach children to suppress their emotions rather than learn to process and manage them.
The study adds to a growing body of evidence that early parenting styles have a lasting impact on a child's biological systems. The authors suggest that parents who focus on warmth and consistent, but not harsh, guidance may help their children build healthier stress regulation skills.
