When my daughter turned nine, I decided to give her something different for her birthday. Instead of another toy or a party with planned activities, I offered her a "Yes Day" -- a full 24 hours where I would not say no to any reasonable request. I thought I knew what to expect: candy for breakfast, a trip to the trampoline park, maybe staying up past midnight watching cartoons. What actually happened surprised me.
The morning started predictably enough. She asked for pancakes with sprinkles and a movie before noon. But as the day went on, her requests shifted. She wanted me to sit beside her while she drew. She asked if we could walk to the park and push her on the swings. She wanted to bake cookies together, even though I am terrible at baking. She asked to read an extra chapter at bedtime, then another one after that.
By the end of the day, I realized that her biggest requests were not about things or treats. They were about presence. She wanted my attention, my time, and my trust that she could make good choices. The "yes" she valued most was not permission to eat ice cream for dinner. It was my willingness to stop rushing, stop checking my phone, and just be with her.
I learned something that day. Kids do not always need elaborate plans or expensive gifts. Sometimes they need a parent who says yes to the small things -- the extra story, the silly game, the slow walk home. That day taught me that giving her control once in a while does not mean losing authority. It means building trust. And trust, it turns out, is the best gift of all.
