Dr. Randy Cale’s Terriffic Parenting: The sacred pause

Dr. Randy Cale’s Terriffic Parenting: The sacred pause

Almost everything I have ever regretted saying came from the same mistake: I failed to pause. The words usually arrived quickly, confidently and with impressive internal justification. In that moment, my mind assured me that the truth needed to be spoken, that correction was urgent, or that my frustration was entirely reasonable. But the aftermath told a different story. Regret, shame, and the slow work of repairing a relationship followed.

This pattern is not limited to parenting. It shows up in marriage, at work, and in casual conversations. Yet the stakes feel highest when we are raising children. A sharp word, a sarcastic remark, or a lecture delivered in anger can land like a stone in a child's heart. The damage is not always visible, but it settles deep.

The solution is deceptively simple. It is the sacred pause. Before you speak, stop. Take one breath. Let the heat of the moment cool for just a few seconds. In that space, you regain access to wisdom, patience, and the ability to choose your words rather than react. The pause does not mean you avoid the issue. It means you address it from a place of clarity instead of impulse.

Children learn more from how we handle our own emotions than from any lesson we try to teach. When they see you pause, they learn self-control. When they hear a calm voice, they learn safety. The sacred pause is not weakness. It is the strongest tool a parent can carry.
