Finding Joy in the Middle Years of Parenting

Finding Joy in the Middle Years of Parenting

For a long time, I wondered when parenting would stop feeling like a survival game. The baby and toddler years were relentless. I was tired, touched out, and constantly second-guessing myself. I loved my child, but I did not like the daily grind of diapers, tantrums, and sleepless nights. I felt guilty admitting that, but it was true.

Then something shifted. My child turned six, then seven, then eight. The middle years arrived, and I was not prepared for how much I would enjoy them. The constant physical demands faded. My child can now pour their own cereal, tie their shoes, and use the bathroom without help. The emotional landscape changed too. Instead of screaming over a broken cracker, we have actual conversations. I hear about their day, their friends, and their worries.

The middle years are not perfect. There are still arguments about homework and screen time. But the rewards are real. I get to watch my child develop a sense of humor, a curiosity about the world, and a personality that is fully their own. I can share my own interests with them, from hiking to reading. We laugh together now, not just survive together.

If you are in the thick of the baby or toddler years and feeling exhausted, I want you to know that a different phase is coming. It is not that parenting becomes easy, but it becomes more interesting. The middle years have given me a chance to actually enjoy being a parent. I no longer ask when it gets easier. I am too busy having fun.
