An Israeli initiative called Attention Revolution is gaining momentum in the fight against childhood smartphone addiction, using a surprisingly low-tech tool: a parent contract. The program, which operates on a class-by-class basis, asks parents to sign a social agreement that delays the age at which children receive their first smartphone and limits daily screen time.
According to a representative named Banner, the initiative is growing "rapidly, sevenfold" in recent years. The core mechanism is not a government mandate or a school ban, but a collective commitment among parents. By signing the contract, families agree to hold the line together, preventing the social pressure that often forces parents to give in when "everyone else" has a phone.
The contracts typically delay smartphone ownership until at least the eighth grade and set strict rules for usage, such as no phones in bedrooms at night. The approach tackles the problem at its root: the fear of social exclusion. When a critical mass of parents in a single class agrees to the terms, the pressure on any one family to break the rules disappears. The program has seen a surge in demand as parents report rising rates of anxiety, sleep deprivation, and attention issues linked to early and unrestricted phone use.
