The pressure to be a cool parent is everywhere these days, but Michelle Obama is pushing back hard against that trend. The former First Lady argues that mothers and fathers who focus too much on being their child's friend are missing the point of their actual job. "Your kids have to learn that you are the parent," she said in a recent interview. "They need to know that there is a line."
Obama explained that children crave structure and boundaries, even when they complain about them. When parents blur the line between authority figure and pal, she warned, kids lose a sense of security. They need someone who will say no, enforce rules, and prepare them for a world that will not always treat them like a buddy. "If you are their friend first, who is going to teach them about consequences?" she asked.
Her comments come as a direct challenge to a popular parenting style that prioritizes emotional closeness over discipline. Obama, who raised two daughters in the White House, stressed that love and firmness can coexist. She believes that being a respected parent now leads to a healthier adult relationship later. "You can be warm and loving without being their peer," she said. "They have plenty of friends. They need a mom or a dad."
