Parents who do too much for their children are setting them up to lack crucial mental resilience, says psychiatrist and bestselling author Daniel Amen. He emphasizes that overprotective parenting can inadvertently lead to a lack of confidence and independence in children. When parents constantly intervene and solve problems for their kids, they may unintentionally communicate that their children are not capable of handling challenges on their own.
Amen points out that this behavior can lead to a cycle where children become reliant on their parents for validation and support, undermining their ability to develop self-esteem through personal achievements. He warns that by "stealing" their children's opportunities to overcome difficulties, parents may be increasing their own self-esteem at the expense of their child's mental fortitude.
To foster resilience, Amen suggests allowing children to face challenges and learn from their mistakes. This approach not only builds confidence but also equips them with essential coping skills for future obstacles.
