Parents everywhere have been there. The school run is over, the backpack hits the floor and the question comes, “How was school?” The answer, more often than not, is a non-committal “fine” or “good,” leaving you no closer to understanding your child’s day.
Experts suggest a simple shift in questioning can break this cycle. Instead of the broad, closed query, try asking about specific moments. The most effective prompt is often: “Tell me about something that made you smile today.” This approach bypasses the pressure of a full recap and invites sharing from a positive, emotional perspective.
This type of question does several things. It focuses on a concrete, personal experience rather than a general evaluation. It encourages storytelling. Perhaps most importantly, it fosters connection by sharing in a small joy or a moment of humor, however minor. The conversation that follows can naturally lead to other parts of the day, including any challenges, but it starts from a place of openness rather than interrogation.
The goal is to move beyond the transactional checklist of the day’s events and toward genuine communication. By inviting your child to share a single, positive detail, you create a welcoming space for dialogue, building a stronger bond and offering a true window into their world, one small story at a time.
