From the founding, Americans understood that a republic depends on the character and judgment of its citizens. In the years after the Revolution, that insight took shape in what later became known as civic education. But as the nation approaches its 250th birthday, the old model of teaching civics in a classroom is no longer enough. What the country needs now is something deeper: civic parenting.
The original approach to citizenship was never just about memorizing the three branches of government. It was about instilling habits of self-governance, responsibility, and neighborly obligation. Today, many young people graduate high school without a clear sense of how a bill becomes a law, let alone why they should care about local school board elections. The problem is not a lack of curriculum. It is a lack of lived experience.
Civic parenting means modeling democratic habits at home and in the community. It means discussing current events at the dinner table, volunteering together, and showing children that their voice matters in a town hall meeting. It means teaching patience, compromise, and the value of disagreeing without demonizing the other side.
As America turns 250, the task is not simply to add another class to the school day. It is to raise a generation that sees citizenship as a daily practice, not a distant subject. That starts with parents, mentors, and neighbors who take the time to show what a republic really requires.
