Many parents know the feeling. You pick up your child from school, ask "How was your day?" and get a one-word answer: "Fine." Or a shrug. The conversation ends before it starts. But according to parenting experts, the problem is not the child. It is the question itself.
Gentle parenting strategies suggest that children open up more naturally when parents shift their approach. Instead of a direct question that feels like an interview, try these five simple tips.
First, share something about your own day first. When you model vulnerability, your child feels safer to do the same. Say something like, "I had a tough moment at work today. I felt frustrated, but I took a deep breath." This invites connection rather than interrogation.
Second, ask specific but low-pressure questions. Instead of "How was school?" try "What did you eat for lunch?" or "Who made you laugh today?" These are easier to answer and often lead to longer stories.
Third, use parallel activities. Sit next to your child while they draw, build with blocks, or eat a snack. Children often talk more when they are not making eye contact. The activity lowers the pressure.
Fourth, wait. Do not fill the silence. After you ask a question, give your child time to think. A few seconds of quiet can feel long to an adult, but it gives a child space to form their thoughts.
Finally, validate their feelings without jumping to solutions. If your child says they had a bad day, resist the urge to fix it. Instead, say "That sounds really hard. I am here to listen." This builds trust and makes them more likely to come to you again.
These small changes can turn a daily script into real conversations.
