Why I Stopped Bragging About My Kids to Everyone But Them

Why I Stopped Bragging About My Kids to Everyone But Them

For years, I thought I was being a great parent. I told my coworkers about my daughter's straight A's. I bragged to my neighbors about my son's winning goal. I posted on social media about every achievement, every award, every proud moment. But I never said those same words to my children.

It hit me one evening when my daughter came home from school, dropped her backpack, and said, "You tell everyone else I'm smart, but you never tell me."

She wasn't angry. She was hurt.

I realized I had been treating my kids like trophies. I showed them off to impress other adults, but I withheld the one thing they actually needed: direct, honest praise. They heard me talk about them, but they didn't hear me talk to them.

So I stopped. I stopped posting their grades online. I stopped telling my friends about their accomplishments before telling them. Now, when my son does something great, I look him in the eye and say it. When my daughter works hard, I tell her I notice. Not for likes or comments. Just for her.

The change was immediate. They started talking more. They started trusting me more. They stopped feeling like they had to earn my attention through achievements.

I still brag about them sometimes. But now, I make sure they hear it first. Because the people who need to hear your pride the most are the ones you're proud of. Not the ones you're trying to impress.
