For decades, I have worked closely with families, and a troubling trend has become impossible to overlook. Many children today are growing up in an environment meticulously engineered for relentless ease and immediate gratification. While born from love, this pursuit of an ever-easier childhood carries a significant, often hidden, cost to their long-term development.
The constant removal of frustration, boredom, and struggle deprives children of essential learning opportunities. They miss the chance to build resilience by working through challenges, to cultivate patience by waiting, and to develop problem-solving skills by facing manageable failures. When parents consistently intervene to smooth every bump, children internalize a message that discomfort is to be avoided at all costs, not navigated.
This well-intentioned cushioning can lead to young adults who are emotionally fragile, lacking in perseverance, and easily overwhelmed by ordinary life demands. The core capacities for self-regulation, motivation, and coping—which are forged in the fires of minor, age-appropriate adversity—remain underdeveloped. Ultimately, in seeking to make childhood easier, we may be making adulthood profoundly harder. The goal is not to create a childhood of hardship, but one that includes the necessary challenges that foster growth, grit, and genuine confidence.
