A new initiative at Coastal Texas College is putting parenting students at the center of decision-making. Mariceli SantiagoCruz, the Director of Student Life and Activities, recently highlighted the creation of a student-led committee designed specifically for those balancing coursework with raising children. The goal is straightforward: give these students a direct role in shaping the programs and services that affect their daily lives.

For many parenting students, the typical college schedule and support systems do not account for the realities of childcare, irregular study hours, or the financial strain of diapers and tuition. SantiagoCruz explained that the committee was formed after hearing repeated concerns from students who felt their unique challenges were overlooked. Instead of administrators guessing what help is needed, the committee allows parents to identify gaps and propose solutions themselves.

The group is already working on ideas like flexible study lounges with supervised play areas, priority registration windows that align with school drop-off times, and better communication about existing resources like food pantries or emergency childcare funds. SantiagoCruz emphasized that the committee is not just a symbolic gesture. It has a direct line to campus leadership, and its recommendations are taken seriously during budget and policy discussions.

This shift toward student-led advocacy reflects a broader recognition that traditional college structures often fail nontraditional students. By handing the microphone to those who live the struggle every day, the college hopes to build a more supportive environment where parenting students can persist and graduate. As one committee member put it, "We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for a fair chance to succeed."
