There was a time when raising a child was never just the parents’ job. Someone was always around. A grandparent. An aunt. A neighbour who knew the family. This proverbial "village" provided not only practical help but also shared wisdom, reassurance, and a vital sense of community. Today, for many urban families, that village feels like a relic of the past, contributing to a pervasive sense of stress and isolation in parenting.
Geographic mobility means extended families are often scattered across the country or the globe. Dense urban living can paradoxically breed anonymity, with neighbours remaining strangers behind closed doors. Long work hours and packed schedules leave little time to forge the deep, trusting relationships necessary for mutual support. Consequently, the entire weight of childcare, emotional labour, and decision-making falls squarely on the nuclear family, often just one or two adults.
Rebuilding these support systems requires intentional effort. Experts suggest starting small by connecting with just one or two local families with children of similar ages. Prioritizing regular, low-stakes interactions, like shared playground visits, can lay a foundation. Seeking out consistent community hubs, such as libraries, recreation centres, or faith groups, offers more natural opportunities for bonds to form over time. The goal is not to recreate the past, but to consciously construct a new, modern web of connections, transforming the daunting task of solo parenting into a shared, and far less stressful, journey.
